We’d like to introduce you to another of our incredible physicians and medical advisory board members, Dr. Rakhna Araslanova.

Dr. Araslanova was always interested in the field of medicine, especially growing up with a mother in maternal-fetal medicine. At the start of her undergraduate degree, she was more inclined to pursue a career in microbiology and research, however working with clinicians is what motivated her to pursue medicine. She was inspired by their ability to transfer research findings to significantly impact patients’ lives.

She spent her early academic career in Atlantic Canada at Dalhousie University, graduating with a University Medal and Honors in Microbiology and Immunology. From there, she completed her medical degree at the University of Ottawa and pursued one of the top Canadian surgical training programs in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Western University, leading to board certification by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and then the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Araslanova then completed a highly coveted Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at the prestigious Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. There, she had the unique opportunity to train with world-renowned reconstructive and aesthetic surgeons, further advancing her training in the comprehensive management of facial paralysis, including the full spectrum of surgical reanimation. She was awarded the prestigious Jack R. Anderson Prize for Scholastic Excellence, an award for the highest score in North America on board examination administered by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

We meant it when we said she is incredible! Beyond her expertise, she’s also a wonderful, generous person who is passionate about giving back.

“One of the most rewarding highlights of my practice has been serving on the Medical Advisory Board of the Little Babyface Foundation, providing pro bono surgical care to children with craniofacial birth defects,” Dr. Araslanova told us. “Little Babyface Foundation allows for a unique opportunity for children from all over the world to benefit from evidence-based, cutting edge treatments in one the most vibrant cities in the world, at no cost to their family.”

Currently, Dr. Araslanova is in a private practice affiliated with Lenox Hill and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospitals in New York. She is Clinical Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Araslanova performs both advanced reconstructive and aesthetic facial surgery, combining what she describes as the two most important aspects of any plastic surgery: form and function. The ongoing collaborative work with her colleagues and mentors has allowed her to actively present and publish their research efforts both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Araslanova’s most recent patient, who was sponsored by the Foundation, underwent multistage, multimodal treatment of the lower lip venous malformation. He initially underwent laser and sclerotherapy treatment followed by surgical lip reduction and additional laser. This treatment was life-changing for him and his family. It also feels monumental for Dr. Araslanova to see how her patient truly benefited from years of research, leading to a better understanding and therefore proper management of these challenging vascular lesions. The results show how research significantly impacts patients’ lives, and that was what initially motivated Dr. Araslanova to pursue medicine and surgery.

We can attest to the fact that Dr. Araslanova is changing lives on a daily basis. We couldn’t be more grateful to work alongside her, and we want to thank her for sharing her extraordinary skill and expertise with us.
