We really love getting updates and photos of all the children we’ve helped at the Little Baby Face Foundation, and we hope you love reading their updates as much as we do! Today, we’re sharing Veronica’s incredible journey with you.
Veronica, age 12, was born with microtia. Her right ear was deformed, blocking her ear canal and keeping her from hearing properly. This month, she flew all the way from Veracruz, Mexico to have her first surgery with us at the Little Baby Face Foundation.

Her mother, Gabriel, was focused on finding the right help for Veronica. Gabriel had found a place in her home country where it was possible for Veronica to have an ear reconstruction surgery, but It wasn’t affordable for her family, and most importantly, it didn’t seem to be the best treatment for Veronica because it would not have helped her hear any better. “I wanted, of course, as every mother does, the whole package. To get it done and to get it right.”

Unfortunately, the cost was too prohibitive to even dream of the right treatment for Veronica, one that would not only reshape her ear, but also improve her hearing. For years, Gabriel resigned herself to letting it be, because she didn’t see any other choice. Veronica was resilient, and she was functional. But she still had trouble hearing, and Gabriel of course wanted better for her daughter.

When we asked Gabriel how she found the Little Baby Face Foundation, she explained, “I couldn’t find anything like this—nothing affordable, nothing right. I just couldn’t find this in my country, sadly. A cousin of mine told me, ‘Are you going to leave your daughter like that?’ And I said, “I don’t want to, but I can’t [find a solution]!’ She started to look, and she gave me the link, and oh yes, I applied! As fast as I could!” Being accepted at the Little Baby Face Foundation has given the family new hope.

Gabriel told us how happy she is for Veronica to be getting this surgery. “She was pretty as she was, but well, you know, it’s nice to have all the pieces that you should! The most amazing thing, of course, is that she will have good hearing. She has been pretty good with that little bit of hearing, but it’s great for her to [finally have improved hearing] after 12 years.”

Veronica’s first surgery went smoothly, and she is in good spirits. This first surgery was to focus on creating the framework of her ear, and she will need a subsequent surgery in 3-5 months to pull her ear away from the side of her head, fix the earlobe, and insert a bone anchored hearing aid, along with some other reconstructive details. Because her left ear is slightly macrotic, we will also be bringing that ear a bit closer to the side of her head, that way we don’t have to bring the reconstructed ear out as far. It will be quite the transformation for Veronica, and we are very excited for her.

Veronica said she loved the trip to New York City. Her mother said of the experience, “The Little Baby Face Foundation is a blessing—a big, huge blessing—for all those children that need any facial surgery. Everything was so great, the experience of coming here. I’m not an English-speaker, but everybody was so nice with me, everybody was helpful, everybody was trying to understand me. The Ronald McDonald House is great, the people at Ronald McDonald House are great. Dr. Romo and the team are excellent. The whole thing is a blessing for families who have a situation like mine.”
