We really love getting updates and photos of all the children we’ve helped at the Little Baby Face Foundation, and we hope you love reading their updates as much as we do! Today, we’re sharing Reena's incredible journey with you.
Reena, age 11 from the Philippines, came back to us recently to continue her treatment for the venous malformation on her lower lip, chin, gum, and tongue. Reena flew to New York City with her father for the first time in 2017 to have her first surgery with the Little Baby Face Foundation, and has had several trips back since.

If you haven’t read Reena’s story already, start here where we explain Reena’s journey with venous malformation. Prior to treatment, she was unable to eat, drink, or speak without pain. That seems like another lifetime ago now, as Reena is currently able to eat, drink, and speak pain-free and has for years now. We are honored to continue to provide her the very best care till she turns 21. (And as much as we enjoy her visits, we certainly hope she’ll be done with her treatments much sooner!)

Reena visited with Dr. Waner for an examination prior to treatment. It had been 2 years since Dr. Waner had treated Reena, and he needed to assess her progress and condition in order to finalize her treatment plan. He determined that the most effective treatment for Reena was a combination of laser and bleomycin injections. Bleomycin is a sclerosant, which when injected into veins, shuts those veins down. Reena has too many veins in her lip area, so this is exactly what she needs.

Recovery from these treatments is fairly easy. Reena was in some pain, but after a few days she was already feeling better. During this time, she had to stick to soft foods—milkshakes, smoothies, ice cream. Luckily, New York City has no shortage of options, and Reena wasn’t too bothered by this.

Reena will likely need further laser treatments in the future. As we do with all of our families, we will keep in touch with Reena and her parents periodically to see how she is doing, and to arrange her next treatment when the time is right.

During Reena’s latest visit, Reena’s father remarked on just how far she has come throughout her time with the Little Baby Face Foundation and gave extra thanks to Dr. Romo and Diane for everything they’ve done for Reena and her family. Reena chimed in to say how much she likes being in New York City, and she told us, “My face is now very wonderful, and I really like it.” We agree 100%, Reena!
